Universal Laser Systems (via Aerotek)
Position: Mechanical Assembler
Dates: May 2011 – Feb. 2012
Universal Laser Systems (ULS) is a manufacturer of laser cutting and engraving machinery. As a mechanical assembler at ULS I worked on the manufacturing floor building ULS equipment. While my primary responsibilities involved the assembly of machines, I was occasionally called on to assist in troubleshooting of malfunctioning systems.
Being a small-scale manufacturing environment I had more visibility into all areas of the manufacturing than I have had at most of the larger manufacturing facilities I have worked at. This included be directly involved in inventory accounting, working with engineers to improve product designs and manufacturing processes, and visibility into all of the the manufacturing stages / processes. While very different from large-scale manufacturing in many ways, a lot of the same manufacturing principles applied and it came with its own sets of problems. It was certainly a good experience that gave me a better understanding of manufacturing.
Responsibilities
- Conduct mechanical assembly tasks for product manufacturing (tasks dependent on manufacturing station assigned to)
- Train new staff on assembly procedures of my stations of expertise
- This included new assemblers as well as all new engineers, as every engineer was required to build at least one unit start to finish as part of their onboarding
- Monitor parts inventory to ensure advanced notice provided for necessary parts replenishment
- Daily, Weekly, and Yearly inventory checks were performed
